Louis van Gaal has not abandoned the idea of managing Tottenham once his contract as Holland’s national team boss has expired in the summer.
Tottenham handed Tim Sherwood an 18-month contract as head coach after being informed by Van Gaal that he would not combine the White Hart Lane role with taking Holland to the World Cup.
Sherwood has since impressed in the top job, despite the FA Cup defeat to Arsenal, quickly earning the respect of the players and pleasing chairman Daniel Levy with a more ambitious style of football.
But that has not totally put off Dutchman Van Gaal, who is interested in managing in England and still views Tottenham as a potential opportunity.
It is understood that during talks with Levy last month, Van Gaal made it clear that he would be happy to work with the current squad without requesting a big overhaul of the playing staff and would be prepared to pass on his expertise to Sherwood.
Van Gaal is now expected to keep a close eye on Tottenham for the remainder of the season in case the White Hart Lane club decide to make another change in the summer. He could also receive other offers.
Spurs currently have no plans to move Sherwood aside or bring Van Gaal in above him, but that could be reassessed if the club fail to qualify for the Champions League or performances and results slip below Levy’s high expectations.
Having given Sherwood the head coach title, Tottenham would not necessarily have to sack the 44-year-old to bring Van Gaal in, although the former midfielder has insisted he does not see himself as a No 2.
Van Gaal has won La Liga twice as Barcelona manager, finished top of the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich and won the Dutch title three times while in charge of Ajax, where he also won the 1995 European Cup.
Frank De Boer is another Dutch manager Spurs looked at after sacking Andre Villas-Boas, but it is believed the Ajax boss is holding out for Barcelona and is unlikely to change his mind at the end of the season.
"We are always confident because we trust our players, and we never give up,"--- said boss Mauricio Pochettino.
